The Rage Gauge system returns when a player received damage the gauge increases. Hikyaku, "the Edo Express Delivery Man" is present once again (only money/bonus points are gone). Basic moves like Dash (forward twice, also known as the "Bakufu Blitz"), Jump Back (backward twice, also known as "Flying Retreat"), Body Toss (press any button near the opponent), the Locking Swords system (when two armed characters locks their weapons, press Light Slash and Medium Slash quickly), the Barehanded Sword Grab (do a middle circle forward in the joystick when unarmed with the right timing to catch an opponent sword attack and make a counter attack) are present here. Strong Slash can be done pressing Light Slash + Medium Slash together, while Strong Kick with Light Kick + Medium Kick at the same time. This sequel retains the same input as the first Samurai Shodown: two Slash and two Kick buttons, divided into light and medium.
